A Planet Orbiting Two Stars

Astronomical evidence

Kepler-453 b circles a binary star. The discovery analysis gives a planetary period of 240.503 ± 0.053 days and a radius of 6.204 ± 0.039 Earth radii. Those values describe a large planet whose orbit surrounds both host stars. Circumbinary transits are shaped by the movement of the stars as well as the planet. The target being crossed is not fixed in the sky, so transit timing and duration require a model of the whole configuration. A simple sequence of equal intervals is an incomplete description of this geometry. The catalog mass of 16 Earth masses is an upper limit. It cannot be combined with the radius as though both were exact measurements to obtain a uniquely known density. Limits and asymmetric uncertainties are retained in the accompanying catalog table.

The illustrated viewpoint

The foreground moon is entirely fictional. The two stellar lights reflect the real binary architecture, but their apparent sizes, separation and simultaneous visibility are not calculated for a specified epoch. No moon or surface ecosystem is established.
